News: June 2006

Posted June 13, 2006

Luckily, most of the CDs of artists represented by Métisse Music are on the market in France now – at the end of may, releases are becoming more difficult since after the exams for the baccalaureat beginning of June, people start thinking about holidays, and journalists about travelling to the big summer festivals that are blooming all over France from mid June onwards.

Before that, however, there will be the home run of one big musical night to come, the “Fête de la Musique” on June 21. We will celebrate it in style with Darko Rundek, whose poetic and passionate songs, interpreted by Darko and his balkanic Cargo Orkestar can be heard at 9 pm the Palais Royal, in the royal courtyard (Cour Royale) of the Ministry of Culture. He is in good company: on the same night, there will be Davy Sicard from La Réunion, French singer/songwriter star Arthur H. and the Orchestra Baobab from Senegal. Darko Rundek and his Cargo Orkestar will also be at the festival Les Sud à Arles on July 13 – while our favourite Cuban pianist, Omar Sosa, will grace this same festival on July 11.

Beatriz Azevedo (site web), Brasilian singer/songwriter, artist, writer and poet, will be in Paris for three dates : 21st and 22nd July at the Entrepôt, 2th August at the Divan du Monde. If you are in town, do not miss this extraordinary performer, who is admired by many of her Brasilian artist contemporaries. And take a look at her multi-lingual website, which is great fun !

After a very impressive solo piano concert at the Forbidden City of Peking concert hall in the context of the “Piano aux Jacobins” dates of China, a hall which does not often feature western music, Yaron Herman is now in Paris for a few days to promote his album release before performing at the La Borie Festival near Limoges and travelling again for a series of dates in his home country, Israel.

Another big traveller, Paris based Italian pianist Giovanni Mirabassi will play two dates in Korea in August with his quartet after having been featured at the beautiful Austrian Festival of Diersbach at the beginning of this month. If you want to see him in Paris during the summer months, there are two dates scheduled at the Sunside, beginning of August.

Many more of our artists are playing in the big jazz, blues and world music festivals this summer, from Popa Chubby (Nice Jazz Festival, amongst others) and Mathis and the Mathematiks (Montargis, June 10) to Brasilian Vinicius Cantuaria (Parc Floral, Paris, June 17), Jacky Terrasson (three dates, one of which will be with his trio TOP at the New Morning club in Paris), Brad Mehldau (solo at Marciac, August 2). And last not least: virtuoso saxophone player Dave Liebman is part of the line-up of a brilliant edition of the McCoy Tyner sextet which will grace our shores with a concert at Châtelet, Paris on July 7, to be followed by a concert of his group Quest at the Marciac Festival on August 10.
