News: April 2009
Posted April 06, 2009Paul Bley , much revered composer and jazz pianist, will do a rare solo tour of Europe in May, performing the music from his ECM release “Solo in Mondsee”. He will be in concert in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland (see touring page).
April has been off to a great start, with a moving and sparkling concert by Malian artist Oumou Sangare at the Alhambra in Paris, which was sold out two weeks before the event. A rare concert event, celebrated in due fashion by an enthusiastic crowd with the gorgeously dressed Malien ladies in the audience climbing onto the stage to dance to the last songs of the evening, to Oumou’s delight as well as of that of the audience. The concert served as the launch of the Diva’s latest album, “Seya” on World Circuit.
Omar Sosa latest album, a brilliant intermediary project, will be on release through Ryko/Naïve as of April 28. It is called “Across the Divide – a Tale of Rhythm and Ancestry” – is produced by Jeff Levenson and constitutes quite a departure from the Latin/African textures of previous releases, integrating the voice of New England multi instrumentalist Tim Eriksen (also banjo and violin), with an incursion into American native music (country, bluegrass, folk). Omar is credited with piano, Fender Rhodes, electronics, samplers and vocals. This sextet live recording from the Blue Note in New York dates from 2008.
The beautiful Mor Karbasi will be at the Café de la Danse on April 9. She has it all: a gorgeous voice, emotion, character, beauty and grace. Don’t miss this exceptional young Israeli singer of the Ladino repertoire from the Iberian Peninsula, complemented by her own compositions. Mor is based in London and will accompanied by her great team of young UK musicians. “The Beauty and the Sea” is the name of her album, which just entered the French World Music sales chart at no.10.
You will soon hear a lot more about the twins Christophe and Tony Raymond, two young jazz musicians (violin and piano) who will have their first album launched in May, on Lontano/Warner. Their first major concert/showcase will take place at the Café de la Danse, Paris, on May 11.
