News: Afro-Cubism

Posted June 22, 2010

In 1996, a group of extraordinary musicians from Mali was to meet up with a group of extraordinary Cuban musicians in order to record an album together, upon the instigation of Nick Gold of World Circuit Records. The Maliens never made it to Havana, and the album that saw the day instead was that of the incredibly successful Buena Vista Social Club. In October 2010, the brilliant initial project will finally see the light of day: the great lost Afro-Cuban album will be released, 14 years later than planned. Amongst the musicians: Singer and guitarist Eliades Ochoa and his Grupo Patria, Bassekou Kouate (ngoni lute), Djelimady Tounkara (guitar) Toumani Diabaté (kora), Kasse Mady Diabaté, the griot singer and Lassana Diabaté, the balafon player.
