Beatriz Azevedo


Poet, singer and composer Beatriz Azevedo is a Brazilian multi-artist. She won the “Bolsa Virtuose”, grant from the Ministry of Culture of Brazil in 2002. In 2003 she presented her concert at Verizon Music Festival and at Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) “Brazil Premiere!” in New York.

“Bum Bum do Poeta”, the first CD by Beatriz Azevedo, was released in Brazil by Caetano Veloso’s label Natasha Records and in Japan by Nippon Crown Records. “Mapa-mundi [samba and poetry]” is the newest CD of Beatriz Azevedo, produced by Alê Siqueira, whose production credits also include Tom Zé, Elza Soares, Carlinhos Brown and Marisa Monte recent albums.

Beatriz Azevedo’s music features on the compilation “Brazil: The Essential Album” alongside Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, João Gilberto and others Brazilian masters, released by the UK label Union Square Music. Also in England the CD “Bossa Nova Nights” contains a further two tracks by Beatriz Azevedo.

TV Cultura produced a Musical Special Program based on her show “Bum Bum Do Poeta”, which was broadcast in December 2000. Editora Iluminuras published her poetry books “Idade da Pedra” (2002) and ‘Peripatético’ (1996).

A graduate in the Performing Arts, Beatriz has received prizes in Theatre, Poetry and Dramaturgy. She won a scholarship from the Instituto de Cooperacion Iberoamericana in Spain, studying theatre at ‘Sala Beckett’ in Barcelona. Beatriz Azevedo also studied at Mannes College of Music and at Jazz and Contemporary Music Program in New York.

Beatriz Azevedo’s band in NY includes Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Beck), Mauro Refosco (David Byrne), Didi Gutman (Bebel Gilberto), Marivaldo dos Santos and David Heilman (Stomp), Michael Leonhart (Grammy winner) and Bill Holcomb(U-town).
She performed at Tonic, Knitting Factory and Joe’s Pub, music music venues in New York. Beatriz appeared as Vinicius Cantuaria’s special guest in his shows; they created some songs together for the new album of Vinicius, “Horse and Fish”, released in 2004 by Hannibal/Ryko in Europe, US and Japan. Recently Beatriz Azevedo appeared as special guest of Cyro Baptista in the show Beat the Donkey and recorded with the Thievery Corporation at the ESL MUSIC studio.

Released by Biscoito Fino in Brazil and Discmedi in Europe, the album “ALEGRIA” was recorded in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and New York. The CD presents original compositions by Beatriz Azevedo and features special guest appearances by Tom Zé and Vinicius Cantuária. “Alegria” unites great musicians from the Brazilian music scene such as Bocato, Cristovão Bastos, Jorge Hélder, Carlos Bala, Chacal, Guilherme Kastrup, among others, and was produced by Beatriz Azevedo. In New York, Beatriz recorded with a few great talents of the local jazz scene including Anat Cohen, Jamie Leonhart and Michael Leonhart. The repertoire offers compositions, lyrics and music by Beatriz Azevedo and co-writes with Cristóvão Bastos and Vinicius Cantuária. It also features poetry by Oswald de Andrade, Hilda Hilst and Raul Bopp with music by Beatriz Azevedo. “Alegria” explores the diversity of Brazilian rhythms (like maxixe, partido alto, maracatu, coco, embolado, samba) and the endless possibilities of contemporary assimilation; Brazilian traditions like cannibalism and anthropophagy combine with inspirations derived from jazz, tango, afrobeat, Cuban, Indian and French music.
